Anthropic
Why They Matter
Anthropic is the most credible large-scale competitor to OpenAI built on a differentiated safety framing. It demonstrated that a second frontier lab could raise multi-billion-dollar backing while positioning itself as more cautious than its rival — and that enterprise buyers would pay a premium for that posture. The Claude model family is now the primary alternative to GPT in institutional deployments.
Background
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, and several colleagues who departed OpenAI amid disagreements over commercial direction and safety. The company pioneered constitutional AI training methods and made model behavior control central to its public identity. Amazon invested up to $4 billion, making AWS the primary cloud partner. Google also committed multi-billion funding. Anthropic's ban from certain government contexts — and subsequent reinstatement discussions — has become one of the more closely watched policy signals of 2025–2026. Its PBC structure creates different obligations than OpenAI's capped-profit model, a distinction that matters increasingly as both companies negotiate federal contracts.
