Why They Matter
Nvidia controls the hardware layer that makes frontier AI possible. The H100 and successor GPU families are the primary training and inference accelerators for virtually every major lab. Nvidia's position is not merely dominant — it is structural. A competitor cannot train a frontier model at scale without either Nvidia hardware or a years-long detour through custom silicon. That makes Nvidia the most consequential chokepoint in the AI supply chain.
Background
Nvidia began as a graphics processor company for gaming and professional visualization. Jensen Huang bet early on parallel computing for non-graphics workloads, which became the foundation of CUDA — a programming platform that made GPUs the default accelerator for deep learning. The 2012 ImageNet results proved the bet. By 2023, the AI training boom had turned Nvidia into one of the world's most valuable companies by market cap. The CHIPS Act, US export controls on advanced semiconductors to China, and Nvidia's Blackwell architecture rollout are the three primary policy and product vectors shaping its 2026 position. Alternative chip efforts from AMD, Google TPUs, and Amazon Trainium exist but have not shifted Nvidia's core dominance in frontier training.
